Boost for tourism: Ghana ranked second safest place in Africa

Daily Graphic Jan – 25 – 2025 , 08:482 minutes read

Ghana has been ranked as the second safest place in Africa according to the latest ranking by global tourism firm, Altezza Travel.

The report, which recommends tourism destinations for 2025, said Ghana’s crime rate is very low, lower than Canada, Greece and Australia.

Prioritizing safety and crime levels, the report ranked Ghana behind Mauritius but is ahead of Zambia, Namibia, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Tanzania.

Altezza Travel’s Assistant Director, Dickson Munganda, in an interview with Tanzania newspaper, The Citizen, said the report was released in early January after the research conducted during the festive season to counteract the misconception that Africa was an insecure continent.

“The analysis shows that the negative reports are false and ill-intended. The continent has safer countries than many European countries,” Mr Munganda said.

Altezza

Founded in 2014, Altezza is based in Tanzania. Apart from being a travel agency that resells travel packages, it is a fully licensed tour operator that organizes and runs its trips.

Each year, it researches and releases reports on tourism destinations, advising and guiding potential tourists on the ideal places to visit.

In its latest rankings, Altezza Travel selected eight countries as the safest in Africa based on various reports and assigned each country a point.

The report

Mr Muganda said the analysis was based on several rankings, including indexes on Global Peace, Global Terrorism, KOF Globalisation, Crime, Global Safety, and Human Development.

“In terms of the Global Peace Index, Ghana surpasses Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, China, and even Jamaica. In the Terrorism Index, it is among the countries with a zero score. Its crime rate is lower than in Canada, Greece and Australia.

“According to the Numbeo Crime Index 2025, Ghana, Rwanda, and Tunisia are the top three countries with the lowest crime in Africa.

However, crime can be difficult to measure, and rankings often depend on how crime is defined and reported.

“Different sources or indexes may rely on varying data collection methods, time frames, and survey approaches, leading to variations in their findings,” the report stated.

Leader in Africa

It said while Ghana lagged in the global safety and human development index, it was a leader in most African countries, including very popular tourism destinations on the continent.

“Regarding the Global Safety Report and the Human Development Index, Ghana lags behind all “first-world” countries yet outperforms the majority of African nations, including popular tourist destinations such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Madagascar (often romanticized in Hollywood),” portions of the report.
